Community Service: Social Responsibility

At BlueHornet we take our social responsibility seriously. We recognize the need to support our local community efforts here in San Diego, and also contribute in developing countries. The needs of people around us, both locally and afar, have led us to respond, sometimes with free email marketing services, and often with hands-on attention and care.

Nu IntentionsBlueHornet's focus on our social responsibility is currently evidenced in our support of one employee's efforts to make a global impact through a social jewelry business Nu Intentions, who empowers displaced women with employment opportunities in Uganda by providing their email marketing services and moral support. With BlueHornet's support, the jewelry and stories of the women are being shared via the email marketing channel and boosting the awareness of the current sufferings and tribal conflicts in Eastern Uganda.

National Multiple Sclerosis SocietyIn April 2008, BlueHornet contributed to an effort to raise money and awareness for Multiple Sclerosis. Donations were collected via a silent auction and wine tasting party. A portion of the proceeds from the wine purchased was donated to the MS Society, Pacific Chapter. BlueHornet employees also walked in the San Diego MS Walk, an event geared to raise awareness about the disease and educate people with MS and their families about new research and treatment options. Overall, we contributed to donations that reached over $2,300!

Habitat for HumanityBlueHornet seized another opportunity to demonstrate social responsibility by working on a Habitat for Humanity house. This fully handicap-accessible residence was one of several built to replace homes of Native American tribal elders that were destroyed in wildfires that encroached on the San Pasqual reservation located in the Valley Center hills of San Diego County.

Toys For TotsBlueHornet joined other local technology companies in an act of collective social responsibility to support the 3rd annual Tech-for-Tots toy drive. San Diego technology companies met to celebrate the holiday season and to give toys to families in need. The toys went to support the Marines' Toys for Tots Drive. The event was hosted by the San Diego Regional Technology Alliance, the Forum for Women Entrepreneurs, and the San Diego Software Industry Council. BlueHornet was a proud participant and supplied over 200 toys to the cause!

The BlueHornet team gathered to support the residents of Julian, CA - a local community ravaged by the San Diego Wildfires. The residents were given a generous donation of sheds to facilitate the storage of the tools and materials necessary for rebuilding their homes. However, these sheds came disassembled and many families did not have the tools to put them together. BlueHornet volunteered the time and manpower to build sheds for three families. The teamwork, collaboration, and a bit of competition made this service project a fulfilling one that will soon be repeated for other families affected by the tragedy.

The BlueHornet team offered their services to completely rebuild the website of Citizens for Community Values and to provide a free email marketing system for this worthy non-profit organization. We worked with CCVSD to help stop the spread of pornography on the Internet and to educate families about family-safe Internet use.

Early BlueHornet leader, Tim Marusich, delivered numerous presentations to school, PTA, and church groups regarding "Safe Surfing on the Internet for Families" on behalf of Citizens for Community Values of San Diego.

The BlueHornet team converged on a San Diego County home where a recent widow faced over 30 years worth of clutter and debris that her late husband kept and stored. We painted, fixed, repaired, and hauled away over 12 tons of debris over a two weekend period. Our donation of hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars in wood, paint, materials, and hauling services was a special "hands-on" project that we intend to repeat. In fact, the beautiful sunny weekend days, the plentiful pizza, and the frequent laughter at this community service event made it one of the year's most popular.

Social responsibility knows no age, which is why BlueHornet provided introductory computer courses for senior citizens. All proceeds from the training sessions went to the La Jolla Presbyterian Church. Fees earned for the sales of the video course were also donated to the church.

BlueHornet donated its services to Thomas Kinkade and Media Arts Group in promotion of the Sept. 11 charity piece, "The Light of Freedom." The first two editions of the painting each sold 10,000 prints raising $2,000,000 for the Salvation Army.

The BlueHornet team participated in the Walk to Beat Breast Cancer.

BlueHornet supported Rotary International's District Conference and Operation Malawi. In addition, we offered our time, donations, and BlueHornet Corporate Team support to the May March of Dimes.
